Just like the tiny babies who start their lives here, Kadlec’s Neonatal Intensive Care Unit is growing. Our $9-million expansion kicked off in September 2013, thanks to the support of generous Kadlec Foundation donors. But there is much more work to be done.
Why this is a critical need.
Kadlec has the only Level III NICU in our region. Thousands of babies have received exemplary care at Kadlec since 1982 and in recent years it has operated at 83 percent occupancy, well above the 65 percent State Health Plan Guidelines for occupancy.
When there are no available NICU beds to care for a sick or premature baby, Kadlec has to send babies to other health care facilities far away from home. Unfortunately, when these transfers happen they disrupt the entire family, making it difficult for loved ones to be close to those who need them most, the newborns.
Our NICU was last remodeled in 1992 when medical equipment took up less space. New equipment with the latest technology leaves little room for health care professionals to move around efficiently and even less room for concerned parents and families.
In 2010, the state of Washington’s Department of Health approved the request by Kadlec to expand its Neonatal Intensive Care Unit. Kadlec had applied for a Certificate of Need to add 10 beds to its 17 bed capacity. Fifteen of the total NICU beds were designated to be at Level III care, the highest level of neonatal intensive care available; Kadlec was one of only four Level III units in Washington. The state approval gave Kadlec authorization to use the other 12 beds for Level II care. To put all 27 bassinets into service at Kadlec would require a significant expansion of the NICU. Kadlec Foundation stepped up to lead a fundraising effort to make that expansion a reality.

It is our goal to fully fund the NICU expansion with the support of donors’ gifts to Kadlec Foundation.
While we are well on our way with fundraising efforts with nearly $6 million in cash and pledges raised, which allowed construction on the expansion to begin, there is still much to be done to support this effort. Kadlec Foundation continues to spearhead the fundraising efforts. How you can help.
If you would like to help to fund the expansion of the NICU, please consider making a gift to Kadlec Foundation. We will work with you to make your gift fit your wishes and needs. We encourage you to contact us and one of our development team will be pleased to assist you.
