Kadlec Announces Plans for New Tri-Cities Emergency Service
Kadlec Regional Medical Center’s award winning Emergency Service is expanding. We are pleased to announce our plans to build a free standing Emergency Department in Kennewick to meet the needs of the Tri-Cities community and surrounding region.
Over the past nine years Kadlec has outgrown its emergency department. We are currently seeing 65,000 visits a year in an emergency department designed to handle 50,000 visits. As we look at the community’s population growth and the demand for emergency services, we know that our current emergency department cannot meet future needs. “No one wants to wait several hours in a waiting room because of the congestion in the emergency department” says Rand Wortman, President and CEO, Kadlec Health System.
Each year more than 10,000 Kennewick residents choose the Kadlec emergency department for their emergency care. As a regional medical center, we wanted not only to address the needs of the Tri-Cities but also the needs a growing number of Oregon residents who seek emergency care at the Kadlec Emergency Department. A south Kennewick location will serve both Kennewick and northeast Oregon.
The new emergency service will be designed to treat emergency patients in a prompt manner. It is important to note that the facility will be an emergency department, not a walk-in clinic. Kadlec is modeling its service after the highly successful free standing emergency services developed by Swedish Medical Center in Seattle. Swedish currently operates three free standing emergency services in the metro Seattle area.
Research clearly shows that patients will drive to an emergency service where they know they will receive prompt, attentive care. Earlier this year we asked Tri-Cities residents if the would drive across town for an emergency if they knew they would be treated and released in half the time of the normal hospital emergency department. Sixty six percent of residents surveyed indicated they would do so. Our goal with the new emergency service is to bring this level of care and customer satisfaction to our growing community and region.
Kadlec Regional Medical Center is the referral center for southeast Washington and northeast Oregon offering a comprehensive scope of health services including open heart surgery, interventional cardiology and neonatal intensive care. Other key services provided at Kadlec include neurosurgery, inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation, an advanced breast care center and one of the northwest’s most advanced digital outpatient imaging centers.
Kadlec is a locally owned, locally governed not-for-profit health system serving patients of the Tri-Cities and surrounding region.
