It represents an extraordinary commitment to high-quality critical care standards and dedication to the exceptional care of patients and their families. Of the approximately 6,000 ICUs across the country, only 122 were recognized as Beacon units in 2009. To receive the award, units must meet rigorous criteria. They are evaluated on 42 criteria in six categories: patient outcomes; evidence-based practice and research; leadership and organizational ethics; excellence and innovation in recruitment and retention; education, training and mentoring; and promoting healing environments.
