Rest and Exercise Oximetry

Testing for the evaluation of desaturation (SpO2 less than 88%) and evaluation of home oxygen need.

Who performs the testing?

A Respiratory Therapist will perform your test.

Indications for PFT testing

Including but not limited to:

  • The need to assess saturation during exercise in patients who are clinically suspected of desaturation.
  • The need to assess response to therapeutic interventions.
  • The need to titrate the amount of supplemental during activity
  • Preoperative assessment for lung resection or transplant
  • Assess the degree of impairment for disability evaluation (pneumoconiosis, asbestosis)

When is a test contraindicated?

Including but not limited to:

  • Unstable angina
  • Recent MI
  • Aneurysm or the heart or aorta
  • Uncontrolled hypertension
  • Acute DVT
  • Recent PE
  • Non-compliant patient
  • Patient physically unable to perform test
  • SpO2 less than 85% on room air
  • Uncontrolled heart failure
  • Uncontrolled asthma

How do I prepare?

  • Plan on arriving 15 minutes before your appointment for check-in.  You will check in at the patient registration desk in the main lobby of the hospital.

What do I do during testing?

During testing you will be asked to walk along a corridor. Your oxygen level and heart rate will be monitored as you exercise. If you desaturate your may be placed on oxygen or your oxygen increased(if already wearing) to obtain a oxygen saturation of 93%.

What happens after testing?

Your physician will be given your test results the same day of testing. If you do not qualify for home oxygen your testing is complete and your appointment is complete.

If you qualify for home oxygen:

  • You will be asked to choose from a list of home care providers and given their contact information before your appointment is complete.
  • The home care company will be notified of your need for oxygen and will contact you to arrange delivery of all equipment.
