Wound Healing Center

Mon - Fri: 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m.

The Wound Healing Center at Kadlec Regional Medical Center provides state-of-the-art, high-quality and cost-effective care of acute and chronic wounds.

You may qualify for care at our Wound Healing Center if you have a wound that is not showing signs of healing after two weeks. We also see patients with complicated surgical or traumatic wounds.

Wound care is provided on a physician referral basis. Your physician will be asked to supply information about your wound, medication, recent lab results and other pertinent information. We can schedule an appointment for you after we receive this information. We will regularly update your physician on your progress.

Wounds can be demanding, time consuming and costly to manage. The trend in early discharge of patients means we need a way to continue wound assessment and management. Our team of trained physicians, nurses and technicians is dedicated to the management of chronic, non-healing wounds, including:

  • Arterial, venous and diabetic wounds
  • Pressure ulcers
  • Burns
  • Hard-to-heal surgical or traumatic injuries

Our wound care services include:

  • Extensive testing to determine underlying factors causing delayed wound healing (and working closely with your physician to treat those underlying conditions)
  • Doppler studies to assess vascular disease, potential for healing and need for surgical intervention
  • Wound management plans that include a team of experts with specialized skills and insights from a variety of disciplines
  • Lower Extremity Amputation Prevention (LEAP) program, provided to all patients with diabetes; LEAP, which includes a sensory-motor assessment, focuses on early intervention and education in an effort to prevent infection and eventual amputation
  • Compression therapy for people with venous ulcers and lymphedema
  • Nutritional counseling for patients, their families and caregivers

The Wound Healing Center also offers highly specialized hyperbaric oxygen therapy for patients with hard-to-heal wounds.

Hyperbaric therapy surrounds the patient with 100 percent oxygen at higher-than-normal atmospheric pressure. This increases the amount of oxygen in the patient’s blood. In the case of wounds, it also allows red blood cells to pass more easily through the plasma into the wound to heal it from the inside out. Diabetic foot wounds are an excellent example of wounds that may benefit most from this type of treatment.

During hyperbaric therapy, patients rest on a bed covered in a large, see-through plastic shell. Patients can watch movies on a screen mounted above the chamber while hearing the movies and communicating with others outside the chamber through a speaker system.

The only physical sensation resulting from the treatment is a slight pressure on the eardrum, such as that felt when a place lands, as the air in the chamber is compressed.

A typical treatment regimen includes about 20 90-minute sessions inside a chamber.

We also provide non-invasive vascular testing to assess the health of your arteries and veins, as well as the severity of disease. We offer:

  • Ankle/brachial index measurement to reveal functional arterial obstruction
  • Segmental pressure measurement to detect narrowing or blockage of arteries in the leg
  • Venous reflux test to assess the competence of the leg’s superficial and deep venous system
  • Toe pressure measurement to help predict healing of foot and toe ulcers
  • Doppler waveform analysis to assess location and severity of obstructions
  • Transcutaneous oxygen tension measurement (TCPO2) to assess oxygenation within tissue
